2011-szeptemberében, Putyin újraválasztásának estéjén alapította egy maroknyi orosz fiatal lány, élükön Nagyezsda Tolokonnyikovával és Marija Aljohinval a Pussy Riot punk-aktivista formációt, s a lányok később Putyin–ellenes performanszaik, kirakatperük, bebörtönzésük és munkatábori meghurcolásuk okán váltak világszerte ismertté. Végül, olyan sztárok aktív közreműködésével megfogalmazódó nemzetközi nyomás hatására sikerült csak visszakapniuk a szabadságukat, mint Madonna, a Red Hot Chili Peppers vagy a Franz Ferdinand zenekar. „Ráébredtünk, hogy Oroszországnak szüksége van egy harcos, punk-feminista bandára” – nyilatkozták korábban, máshol pedig így: “A Pussy Riottal az volt a célunk, hogy az egész világ nevessen Putyinon, hogy egyetlen magára valamit is adó vezető se üljön le vele egy asztalhoz”. Az együttes politikai nézetei a feminizmus és az antiautokratizmus keverékéből állnak össze. Performanszaik, dalaik feminista kiáltványok, a nemek egyenlősége és a demokrácia nevében. Legutóbb a Glastonbury fesztiválon, a világsajtó övezte hatalmas figyelem közepette mutatkoztak be. A BBC szerint „Nagyon klasszak voltak, hihetetlenül inspirálóak.”. A Pussy Riot bebizonyította, hogy a forradalom még mindig él Glastonbury-ben” – így a Guardian. Az angliai sikerükön felbuzdulva a "lányok" azzal jelentkeztek a Sziget szervezőinél, hogy a külföldön "Island of Freedom" néven hirdetett Sziget fesztiválra is szívesen eljönnének, hogy egy interaktív beszélgetést tartsanak. Ez a program egyben egy adománygyűjtő esemény is, mivel a Szigettől kapott gázsijukat az általuk támogatott emberi-jogi szervezetnek ajánlják fel. Tehát augusztus 14-én a Szabadság Szigetén a Pussy Riot tagjai hirdetik majd a szabadság igéjét."
Pussy Riot's first song in English is dedicated to Eric Garner and the words he repeated eleven times before his death. This song is for Eric and for all those from Russia to America and around the globe who suffer from state terror - killed, choked, perished because of war and state sponsored violence of all kinds - for political prisoners and those on the streets fighting for change. We stand in solidarity.
Pussy Riot's Masha and Nadya are being buried alive in the Russian riot police uniforms that are worn during the violent clashes of police and the protesters fighting for change in Russia. A pack of "Russian Spring" brand cigarettes is on the ground at the beginning. "Russian Spring" is a term used by those who are in love with Russia's aggressive militant actions in Ukraine, and the cigarettes are a real thing.
"I Can't Breathe" was recorded in New York in December 2014 during the protests against police brutality together with Pussy Riot, Richard Hell, Nick Zinner, Andrew Wyatt, Shahzad Ismaily (The Ceramic Dog) and Russian bands Jack Wood and Scofferlane.

UPDATE: The remaining imprisioned members of Pussy Riot were released on December 23rd 2013, nearly two years after being arrested.
