"The National Beat Poetry Foundation, Inc. was registered on March 1, 2016 in the State of Connecticut, USA, business ID: 1200316 and is owned and run by me, Deborah Tosun Kilday, along with help from several advisors. I am a writer, poet, photographer, and artist. I’m a award winning author and have written several books of poetry, plus a how-to book on life as a VIP gamer in casinos.

It started in 2008 as a one time three day festival called the Connecticut Beat Poetry Festival. Poetry events continued to be held monthly, but they were not Beat themed. An increased desire for more Beat themed events was expressed by poets from around the world, so in 2014 a series of National Beat Poetry Festivals and International Beat Poetry Festivals were planned and held across the United States and worldwide under our direction. In 2015 the National Beat Poetry Festival was receiving emails from other poets from around the world asking if there was one poet that stood out from the rest that should be recognized for their hard work and dedication to the arts, including Beat Poetry which has no conventional rules or form. The founders of the festival decided to create a Beat Laureate Program to recognize such individuals. After sending out an announcement on various social media sites asking for nominations from poets as to who they thought deserved recognition, a flood of emails, calls, and messages, started being received and a group of poets reviewed the nominations along with us. Various criteria was considered for who would be named. The difference between conventional poetry and Beat Poetry is, Beat Poetry gives a voice to everyone. It is the epitome of free verse using your own form, your own rules, to express your own ideas on love, life, and the world, with an emphasis on issues concerning the environment and humanity. On September 2015, we named and honored our first National Beat Poet Laureate, George Wallace from Long Island, NY, USA. His long list of accomplishments and recommendations from his peers, was what made him our choice.

As the National Beat Poetry Festivals and International Beat Poetry Festivals received more interest and attention from poets around the world wanting to be a part of it, in March 2016, the National Beat Poetry Foundation, Inc. including its  festival names, National Beat Poetry Festival, International Beat Poetry Festival, and Kerouac Cafe were legally incorporated in the State of Connecticut, USA.

We continue to name a few poets each year for our Beat Laureate program. We name a National Beat Poet Laureate, USA
and a International Beat Poet Laureate who serve a 1 year term. We also name several different state poets from the United States who serve a two year term.

We reserve a special Lifetime Honor for a select group of Poets who have dedicated their whole life to poetry and the Arts. Our selection committee who’s names will remain anonymous, do extensive investigation into these individuals and then submit their findings to me, Debbie Tosun Kilday, the owner of the organization, who then makes the final decisions. So far there are only six who have achieved the lifetime status and have been recognized and recommended to receive the award and title. "
